Holidays 2019/20

We enjoyed a Spring Holiday to the Isle of Wight in March

We also visited Germany in September.

SECRET WATERWAYS OF GERMANY

In September a group of Travel Group Members travelled to Berlin where we spent 3 days exploring the City, mainly on the top deck of a double decker bus. Ann Keen had visited previously and she became our very efficient guide. Inevitably we visited The Brandenburg Gate, Check Point Charlie and saw the parts of the Berlin Wall that are still standing to commemorate its fall. I found it a very sobering experience being reminded of the major effect it had on the population, dividing families for many years. Another sobering experience was visiting the Holocaust Memorial which is an area of ground planted with 2,700 concrete pillars of different heights. We then joined our ship, the Johannes Brahms for a 12 day journey along many quiet rivers and canals travelling from Berlin to Amsterdam. The ship was smaller than many river cruise ships which was necessary due to the many narrow locks we passed through. Consequently cabins were smaller than we prefer but food and entertainment were excellent. A highlight was our visit to Sanssouci Palace with its terraced gardens designed by Frederick the Great. We continued via Wolfsburg, Bremen and Groningen and ended our cruise in Amsterdam where we enjoyed the inevitable canal cruise around The City.

Excursions for 2019 included:

Staffordshire Farmhouse Lunch & Dorothy Clive Garden

A scenic drive by coach to Marsh Farm in Staffordshire where we had lunch. After lunch we went to see the gardens which have a good variety of autumn interest trees and shrubs including acers, hydrangeas, sorbus, parrotias and liquidambars. There are 12 acres of gardens and there is a café and shop.
